Originally the Eiffel Tower was a reddish-brown color. It has been painted yellow, yellow-brown and chestnut in decades past. Currently the tower is painted in three shades of "Eiffel Tower Brown," receiving a 60-ton fresh coat of paint every seven years. It is named after the tower's designer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, opened in 1889 and was built to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution.
