These embroidery scissors are inspired by sewing items covered in tartan paper, which were highly fashionable throughout the 19th century. Originally made in Mauchline, Scotland, they soon spread across Europe. In our version, the material is not paper but genuine tartan fabric, enclosed in a layer of crystal acetate. The fine, delicate blades are engraved with the Sajou name.
Characteristics:- Size: 11cm – Sajou mark on the upper blade
- Pompom: natural linen
- Presentation: box printed with the same tartan as the scissors
A key indicator of the quality of embroidery scissors is the pairing marks – small numbers engraved on the inside of each blade. These numbers show that the two parts have been precisely adjusted from the very first assembly step. On the photos shown here, the number is 25. This number varies from one pair to another.
Once this adjustment is done, the scissors are disassembled so that each part can undergo the necessary treatments, before being reassembled and perfectly finished.
In the 19th century, the production of such scissors required the expertise of a cutler for the steel blades and an ornamental turner for the handles. Today, this distribution of skills continues: the blades are made by a cutler, and the handles are crafted in our own workshops.
